What to Expect at Your Dermal Filler Procedure

During your consultation, our specialist will discuss your areas of concern.  They will suggest an approach that will increase symmetry and balance to compliment your natural beauty.  Given that there are many types of dermal fillers, our specialist will select the most appropriate to provide you with an optimal outcome and your desired results.

Dermal fillers are injected using a very fine needle.  You may experience some discomfort when getting dermal fillers in highly sensitive areas like your lips.  This discomfort can be minimized by applying a strong numbing cream prior to the injection.  Our dermal fillers have lidocaine mixed in so the procedure gets more comfortable as more product is injected. We also have massage tool and squeeze balls available.

As a non-surgical therapy, dermal fillers often allow you to return to daily life right after treatment.  There may be mild redness, swelling, itching or bruising of the injected areas, but you are able to continue on with your daily route. Cold compresses are provided post treatment to aid in any swelling. For more information regarding post-treatment care, please click here.

Complications

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the skin.  So adding more rarely will cause an allergic reaction.  Tindling, a bluish hue, may be seen in areas of thin skin. This effect is rare when an experienced clinician is injecting the product.  Pinching or blocking a blood vessel can occur but is rare.  Seeing a Registered Nurse or Physician with special training in facial anatomy and cosmetics minimizes this risk.  This list is not meant to be exhaustive.  Further discussion during your consultation will focus on your questions to ensure you are informed and comfortable before starting.

Before the procedure it is recommended not to take anti-inflammatory medications or drink alcohol as this can increase the chance of bruising and bleeding.  After the procedure it is advised to avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol consumption and excessive heat or sun exposure for a full day. Try not touch, rub or massage the area to allow the body to recover as quickly as possible.

We know it can be disappointing to have to rebook an appointment.

But if our specialist thinks it might be risky to use dermal fillers on the day of your consultation they will discuss when it would be a good time to return.  While we love to make our patients feel confident and beautiful, our first priority is to make this a safe experience for everyone.

When Will You See Results?

Dermal fillers give results immediately. However final results can often be seen 2 weeks post treatment when the swelling has resolved. Typically, dermal fillers will last for about 6 months to a year but this depends on the type of product and the area being injected. Follow up injections are needed to maintain your desired look.  If you choose not to re-treat, the enhanced area will slowly return to its original appearance.
