Do I Need Annual Laser Resurfacing? 5 Signs It May Be Time

If you’ve invested in laser treatments before—or you’re starting to notice pigmentation, texture and fine lines creeping in—you may be wondering: Do I need annual laser resurfacing?
The short answer? Not everyone needs laser resurfacing every year. But for many patients, annual laser resurfacing can be an effective way to maintain skin quality, address new sun damage and support collagen as the skin continues to age.
The reason is simple: laser resurfacing can correct existing damage, but it doesn’t stop your skin from continuing to age. Sun exposure continues. Pigmentation can return. Collagen production changes over time. Fine lines become more noticeable. Texture can become rougher. And the results you loved after your last laser treatment may gradually begin to fade.
That’s why, for many of our patients at Skin Worthy, once-a-year laser resurfacing becomes part of their long-term skin maintenance plan.
What does annual laser resurfacing actually do?

Laser resurfacing uses controlled energy to create a precise injury within the skin, triggering its natural repair and remodeling processes.
Depending on the technology and treatment depth, laser resurfacing can help improve:
Sun damage and pigmentation
Uneven skin tone
Rough texture
Visible pores
Fine lines
Acne scarring
Dullness
Overall skin quality
Fractional lasers treat microscopic areas of the skin while leaving surrounding tissue intact. As those treatment zones heal, the process stimulates cellular renewal and collagen remodeling.
But here's the important part: the skin you treat today will continue to age tomorrow.
Annual laser resurfacing isn't necessarily about repeatedly fixing the same problem. For many patients, it's about periodically addressing the changes that have accumulated since their previous treatment.
5 signs you may benefit from annual laser resurfacing
1. Your pigmentation keeps coming back

One of the biggest signs that it may be time for another laser treatment is the gradual return of pigmentation. You may have had beautiful results from your previous treatment, only to notice brown spots and uneven tone slowly becoming visible again. That doesn't necessarily mean your laser results have “worn off.” UV exposure is a major contributor to pigmentation, while hormones, inflammation, genetics and aging can also influence pigment production. Laser can treat existing visible damage, but it can't prevent future damage from developing. If you're noticing pigmentation accumulating again despite good skincare and daily SPF, it may be time to reassess your skin.
2. Your skin texture has changed
Sometimes pigmentation isn't what brings patients back. Their skin simply doesn't feel as smooth as it once did. You may notice that:
Your pores look larger.Your skin feels rougher.Makeup isn't sitting as smoothly.Fine lines are becoming more noticeable. These changes can happen gradually as collagen and other structural components of the skin change with age and environmental exposure. Fractional laser resurfacing creates controlled microscopic injury within the skin, initiating a healing response and stimulating tissue remodeling.
That's one reason annual laser resurfacing can become less about “correcting a problem” and more about maintaining overall skin quality.
3. You're starting to see several concerns at once

Pigmentation.
Fine lines.
Texture.
Pores.
Acne scarring.
Dullness.
Most patients aren't dealing with just one isolated concern. One of the biggest advantages of laser resurfacing is its ability to address several aspects of skin aging within the same treatment plan rather than chasing each concern individually. At Skin Worthy, this is also why we frequently stack technologies.
Our Glow Getter combines BBL + HALO, allowing us to target both tone and texture within the same treatment. BBL addresses concerns including visible pigmentation, redness and photodamage, while HALO uses hybrid fractional laser technology to address texture, pores, fine lines and overall skin quality.
For the right patient, combining the two creates a more comprehensive annual skin reset.
4. You loved your previous laser results—but they're starting to fade
This is one of the most common reasons patients consider yearly laser resurfacing.
You had laser.
Your skin looked incredible.
A year or two later, you're looking in the mirror wondering where those results went.
Laser results can be long-lasting, but they aren't permanent because your skin doesn't stop aging after treatment. New UV exposure occurs. Pigmentation can develop. Collagen continues to change. Environmental factors continue to affect the skin. Think of it less as your previous laser treatment “wearing off” and more as new aging and damage accumulating on top of the results you achieved.
That's why maintenance matters. Instead of waiting several years until those concerns become significant again, some patients choose annual laser resurfacing to maintain the improvements they've already made.
5. You want to support collagen as your skin ages
Laser resurfacing isn't only about what we can see on the surface.
What's happening underneath matters too.
Fractional laser treatments stimulate a wound-healing response that includes collagen remodeling. That remodeling continues after the initial healing period, which is why skin quality can continue improving in the months following treatment. BBL also has some interesting research behind it.
A small pilot study examining gene expression in BBL-treated skin found that expression patterns in a number of genes shifted closer to patterns observed in younger skin following treatment.
It's important not to overstate what that means: BBL doesn't literally make your genes younger. The study was small and looked specifically at gene-expression patterns. But it does help demonstrate why we look at energy-based treatments as doing more than simply removing a brown spot. Our goal isn't just clearer skin immediately after treatment. It's better-functioning, healthier-looking skin over time.
So, do I need annual laser resurfacing?
Not necessarily.
There is no rule that everyone should have laser resurfacing once a year.
If your pigmentation is controlled, your texture is smooth, you're happy with your skin and there isn't a concern we're trying to address, there may be no reason to resurface simply because 12 months have passed. Your skin type, pigmentation, treatment history, lifestyle, sun exposure, medications and tolerance for downtime should all factor into the decision.
And not every skin concern should be treated with laser.
The calendar shouldn't determine your treatment plan. Your skin should.
How often should you get laser resurfacing?
There isn't one schedule that works for everyone.
For some patients, annual laser resurfacing makes sense as a maintenance treatment.
Others may go considerably longer between treatments.
Patients working to correct significant photodamage, acne scarring or textural concerns may initially need a series or a different treatment schedule altogether. The depth of treatment also matters. A lighter fractional treatment and a deeper ablative resurfacing treatment aren't interchangeable, and they shouldn't automatically be performed at the same frequency. This is why we assess the skin before determining how often laser resurfacing makes sense for you.
What is the best laser for annual resurfacing?

Again, it depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
At Skin Worthy, one of our go-to treatments for patients looking for a comprehensive annual resurfacing treatment is Glow Getter: our combination of BBL + HALO.
Why combine them?
Because skin aging isn't one-dimensional.
BBL targets pigmentation, redness, sun damage and uneven tone.
HALO uses hybrid fractional technology to improve texture, pores, fine lines and overall skin quality while stimulating collagen remodeling.
Together, we're able to address several of the changes that tend to accumulate throughout the year.
It's also a treatment many members of our own team incorporate into their skin plans.
For patients who require deeper resurfacing, however, we may recommend a different approach, including more intensive TRL resurfacing. The goal isn't to fit everyone into Glow Getter. It's to determine how much resurfacing your skin actually needs.
Is annual laser resurfacing worth it?

For the right patient, annual laser resurfacing can be an efficient way to address several signs of skin aging at the same time while maintaining results from previous treatments. But we don't think of it as something you have to do every year. Think of it as an annual skin assessment.
Has pigmentation returned?
Has your texture changed?
Are pores or fine lines becoming more noticeable?
Are previous laser results beginning to fade?
Would your skin benefit from additional collagen remodeling?
If the answer to several of those questions is yes, it may be time to resurface again. And for many of our patients, that ends up being approximately once a year.
