Love at First "Sight" - How To Care For The Most Sensitive Skin On Your Face

Updated: Jun 27, 2023

They say the eyes are the window to the soul; they display our truths and our emotions. In a recent US study, 69% of the subjects polled responded that they base their first impression of someone on them. The skin around our eyes is some of the most delicate on the body. It is thinner, drier and more sensitive than other parts of our face and requires targeted care. Whether it's fine lines, dark circles, volume loss or brittle lashes, we have the right treatments and products to have your eyes (and the skin around them) looking their best this February.

Fine Lines + Wrinkles

Two of the main causes of Crow's Feet are a loss of elasticity in the skin as well as early wrinkles caused by smiling and squinting. For many, the best way to treat this is with a neurotoxin like Botox or Nuceiva. Your dosage will depend on the extent of your crow's combined with your desired outcome. Many people prefer to keep some movement as it results in a more natural look. In some cases, when there is significant volume loss, a combined treatment with dermal filler is needed in order to get any benefit from a toxin treatment. Other popular areas of the eye you can treat include the jelly roll under the eye and the brow for a lift and to open up the area.

Volume Loss

When it comes to volume loss of the tear trough, dermal filler is an excellent choice for the right patient.

Who is not the ideal candidate?

Any patient with a herniated fat pad, those with poor skin quality and anyone who does not have adequate support in the mid or anterior cheek. For the latter two, trough filler may be an option once the concerns above are addressed, otherwise dermal filler treatment may appear unnatural and results in discolouration under the eye. For those with a herniated fat pad, the best option remains surgical, and we can always refer a colleague in the city.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Patients may have crepey or dehydrated skin under the eye but not real significant volume loss, in this case, hydrators like Redensity 1 are the perfect low downtime treatment to help the under eye look bright and refreshed. Redensity I is loaded with amino acids, vitamins, and minerals and its primary purpose is to hydrate, brighten and build integrity where there is thin or creepy skin. Treatment includes tiny small blebs being deposited into the trough and outside the corner of the eye. Protocol is three sessions, spaced one month apart. (tip: most patients time it with their tox appointments).

Gimme Long Healthy Lashes

Your lashes grow through your eye follicles. The older we get, the slower our growth process becomes, resulting in our lashes appearing thinner/shorter. Eye lash extensions as well as constant fake lash usage can also weaken your natural lash, causing them to fall out as a more frequent rate. Latisse is a no-downtime, once a day treatment that can help you achieve longer, darker and more fuller looking lashes. Patients new to this product require a quick consultation and can purchase their kit in clinic. Results typically peak around Week 16, but you should start to see a different by Week 8.

Cremes + Serums

Not all things are created equal and such is the case when it come to eye care products. Unlike drugstore or beauty store brands, medical grade skincare like ZO Skin Health, has the science and the clinical research behind its products. Regardless of your skin type or current needs, one of these three products will be right for you. Growth Factor Eye contains peptides to quickly improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Eye Brightening Creme helps to lighten dark circles and reduce puffiness and Intense Eye Creme works to restore hydration and calm the skin.

Morpheus, Lasers and Lights (oh my)

As we age our needs and treatment plans will change. Some advanced treatments may include a bit more planning and downtime but are worth considering for optimal results.

Skin tightening = Morpheus8 Improved radiance and texture = Halo Even skin tones = BBL Treat deep or etched in lines and wrinkles = Resurfacing Lasers
