My Summer Melasma Maintenance Routine: What Actually Works for Me

If you've ever struggled with melasma, you know it's not something that simply disappears after a few treatments. I've been dealing with melasma since my early 20s, and like many women, it became significantly worse during pregnancy and postpartum. Over the years, I've learned that managing melasma is less about finding a "cure" and more about creating a maintenance plan that keeps it under control.

As much as I love healthy skin, I also love being outside. Summer in Ontario is short, and I'm not willing to spend it hiding indoors. I enjoy walks, patios, gardening, boating, and sunshine just like everyone else. My goal isn't to avoid life—it's to minimize how much my melasma flares while still enjoying the season.

That's where my summer maintenance routine comes in.

My Summer Melasma Maintenance Strategy

During the warmer months, I focus on treatments that help control pigment without creating excessive inflammation.

My Favourite Skinergy is the Skin Refresher, this is a layered approach of two treatments. First a Dermal Infusion to gently exfoliate the dead layer of  skin off while infusing skin brightening active ingredients. This is followed by Microneedling with ZO® Brightalive™ Accelerated Serum which is 40% more concentrated than its over the counter version.  One of the reasons I love this treatment is that Brightalive contains Tranexamic Acid (TXA), an ingredient that has become a game changer in melasma management. TXA works on multiple pathways involved in pigmentation that trigger excess melanin production in the skin.

In simple terms, it helps calm the signals that tell pigment cells to overproduce colour, making it particularly effective for hormonally driven pigmentation like melasma. What I love most is that TXA can help address pigmentation without creating the irritation that often accompanies more aggressive brightening ingredients. Since inflammation can actually worsen melasma, this is a huge advantage.

For me, these treatments aren't about aggressively treating melasma during the summer. They're about staying ahead of it.

Finally before I start these treatments I want to monitor their results on a deeper level by using Skin Worthy’s newest device an advanced skin scanner called Eve Muse. This AI scanner is a part of every Beauty Club Membership, Beauty Evolution or ZO Kickstarter Program to track results in realtime. This will give me feedback on the efficacy of the treatments I’m doing and how my lifestyle is impacting them.

Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable

No melasma treatment plan works without daily sun protection.

I personally use Colorescience® mineral sunscreens because they provide SPF 50 protection and contain physical blockers such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. I find they offer excellent protection while being easy to wear every day, I actually wear them instead of any foundation or makeup and they give a light coverage and other products such as the glow or bronze give a beautiful shimmer if blended in.

What Happens in the Fall?

Even with diligent sunscreen use and maintenance treatments, a little summer pigment often sneaks through. That's completely normal. Once fall arrives and sun exposure decreases, I typically schedule a Glow Getter treatment to clean up any residual sun damage and pigmentation that accumulated over the summer months. I find this seasonal reset helps restore brightness and gets my skin ready for the more corrective treatments I may choose to do during the winter.

What I've Learned After Years of Melasma

The biggest lesson melasma has taught me is consistency.

It's not about chasing perfection. It's about having realistic expectations, protecting your skin daily, and maintaining healthy habits year-round.

Today, my melasma is far more manageable than it was in my twenties or during pregnancy because I've shifted my focus from correction alone to summer maintenance and prevention.

If you're struggling with melasma, know that you're not alone. With the right combination of professional treatments, medical-grade skincare, and diligent sun protection, it is possible to enjoy brighter, more even-looking skin while still enjoying life—and yes, even summer sunshine.

For those looking for a structured, year-round approach to skin health, our Beauty Club Membership is one of my favourite recommendations. Beauty Club includes regular skin refreshers, customized peels, and ongoing professional treatments designed to maintain healthy, radiant skin throughout every season. It also includes 15% off your skincare which is key to maintenance. Rather than waiting until concerns become noticeable, the program helps you stay proactive with consistent treatments and expert guidance all year long.

If you're struggling with melasma or pigmentation, we would love to help you guide you with plan that works for your skin, your lifestyle, and your goals. Because beautiful skin isn't about avoiding life—it's about having the confidence to enjoy it.
