Skin Worthy presents the ZO Retinol Peel

The secret to youthful skin is a combination of factors, some genetic and beyond our control and some environmental and very much within our control. Here at Skin Worthy we love to talk about positive aging and turning by that clock by enjoying plethora of in-office treatments that effectively battle the signs of aging, but today I want to shake it up and discuss a surprising in-home treatment that rivals some of the results you would only expect to get from your doctors office or medical spa….The ZO Retinol Stimulation Peel.

Having tried every in office procedure we have to offer the Staff of Skin Worthy decided to take on the task of testing this at home treatment to see if it truly gave noteworthy results…Spoiler AlertIT DID!

So what is the ZO Retinol stimulation Peel and why do we love this treatment?

This is an effective treatment that targets rough texture, pores, uneven tone, dullness, fine lines, strengthens skin and reduces sensitivity. This peel is performed over a course of 3 to 5 days using ZO’s Radical Night Repair 1% Retinol. The outcomes are similar to a light to medium depth chemical peel but it can be performed right in your home and tailored to your tolerance level. All three of us that performed the peel decided to follow follow the five day peel for maximum exfoliation. Barb and I went for a moderate to strong peel applying between 8-10 pumps of the retinol twice daily whereas Nicole chose a more “mild” option of 5 pumps twice per day.

What was it like…

Day 1 and 2 there wasn’t really much of a reaction, leaving the skin looking pretty much normal, with a bit of increased redness on day 2.

Day 3 you really notice this peel starting to work you typically feel the skin is tight with some redness and some flaking, at this point the skin feels a bit uncomfortable.

Day 4 you see strong exfoliation with very tight red skin. At this point you are feeling uncomfortable but it is tolerable…remember that this is a strong in home treatment that will yield professional in office result. I wanted to take a moment to talk about retinol reactions and what a typical anticipated reaction looks like. I have attached a link to a video of me discussing retinol reactions on day 4 of this peel so you can get a good look of what a typical anticipated reaction looks like.

Day 5 you are seeing exfoliation with very tight red sensitive skin…you will feel ready for some relief and will be happy the peel is over, but boy will you be happy you did it!

On day 6 we begin the Hydration and calming portion of the peel protocol using ZO’s Renewal Creme up to 5 times per day to provide relief to the reactive skin. I was bringing this stuff to work with me and applying it throughout the day because my skin was a bit fiery. Then suddenly by Day 7/8 our skin was back to normal, but with major noticeable improvements!!

So what did we notice the most in the end….

Overall the biggest thing I noticed was a reduction on pore size and a significant improvement in tone, not to mention baby smooth texture.

Some important things to note:

You shouldn’t do this peel cold turkey, you should start pre-conditioning using a ZO® program with high a potency retinol 0.5% or greater 4-6 weeks before the peel to strengthen skin and enhance the benefits.

Always use an effective Physical Block Sunscreen…this is just as important EVERY DAY but especially important to mention during the use of active product or after skin treatments.

After cleansing morning and night, but before applying the retinol we do recommend using

ZO® Daily Power Defense. This product helps to boost natural hyaluronic acid levels in the skin, encourages DNA repair, and replenishes lipids to optimize barrier function, basically making this peel process more tolerable and enhancing results.

Can I do this peel using any 1 % retinol?

We have received the question before asking if one can use any 1% retinol to perform this peel and to be honest I would say no. We truly believe that in order to achieve safe and satisfactory results this peel should be performed using this specific product. Although other products do exist that would most likely work as a substitute we wouldn’t be able to recommend them as we haven’t used than nor can we attest to their safety.
